Summer Bloggin': Popsicle Keychain with Irene Staal from Sugaridoo!

Summer Bloggin

Today we're visited by Irene Staal from Sugaridoo, who will show us how to make a cute popsicle keychain with yarn and plastic canvas - a perfect quick summer project that you can even make with the little ones home for the summer! Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Irene!

Summer makes me so happy. I love the sun, barbequing outside and going for a swim. And one thing that goes perfectly with all those is ice cream! That’s what brought me to this design, cute little popsicles in happy summer colours. Wouldn’t you like to have one for your keys?

Today I would love to share the popsicle pattern for plastic canvas stitching with you. It’s such a fun little project, perfect for beginners. So, let’s see what we need so we can get started.

We will need:
- Colourful yarn, I used fingering weight cotton yarn
- Two pieces of 6 x 10 squares of 7-count plastic canvas
- A large needle
- scissors
- Keychain or a little ring and key clip

The finished size will be about 4 x 2.5 cm (1.6 x 1 inch)

There are two different patterns, in a few happy colour combinations. The pattern shows the plastic grid in grey, so you know exactly where the stitches need to go. Just pick your favourite popsicles and colours and you’re good to go.

We will be working with cross stitches and back stitches. If you are totally new to working on plastic canvas, you could take a look at this tutorial which covers the basics.

Let’s start by stitching two popsicles on the little pieces of plastic canvas. Don’t worry at all about the back (mine look super messy), you won’t see it when it is finished.

After you made all the cross stiches, it’s time to do the back stiches. Make the cute little faces with black yarn. Don’t pull too hard, just tight enough for the yarn to sit over the cross-stitches is best.

Once you've finished front and back, you can sew them together with the light blue colour. Place the popsicles back-to-back and loop around the edge. I made 3 stitches in each square to nicely fill the sides. Be sure to leave one top corner a bit uncovered, that makes it easier to fit a keychain or ring in there.

Aww, aren’t they cute? I just couldn’t stop making them. Now all we need to do is put a ring on it. I opened a little ring, wiggled it through the top corner and added the little charm and key clip to it. Close the ring, and done!

Perfect little summer gift for a friend.

I hope you liked this project. If you have any questions, just leave a reply, I’m happy to help.

Enjoy the the summer!

Ps. You can find all the materials you need for this project in the Popsicle keychain kit in the Sugaridoo Etsy shop!
