Doctor, doctor...

Found on Flickr

In the old days, if this beaked doctor came to see you, you were probably in pretty bad shape. Plague doctors are often pictured in outfits similar to this one. Apparently the mask held a, much needed, scented substance. The combination of the flowery background and the black thread makes this image, stitched by Amy (Drop Dead Quirky on Flickr) even more eerie. Amy makes heaps of inspiring stuff so do check out her other embroidery work here and stitched tweets here.

update: many thanks to Jen who pointed me in the direction of another take on the Plague Doctor, stitched by Sewphie!

  1. Creepy! I saw a different treatment of the same kind of image last month over at threadhead: http://sewphietom.blogspot.com/2012/02/plague-doctor-ghost-and-lion-o.html

    2. :D Those two ladies should collaborate. Put the glow-in-the-dark-thread and gauze one OVER the black and flowery one. Awesomeness both day day and night. :P

  2. I went to Amy's flicker page and I love the one that says ~ I'd rather have a bottle in from of me than a frontal lobotomy! So funny! All her work is fab!
That Plague doctor is way too creepy.

    1. I think the bottle quote is from Dorothy Parker, I have such a soft spot for stitched witty quotes!
