Book review: Doodle Stitching Embroidery and Beyond

Review: Doodle Stitching - Embroidery & Beyond
Most people are probably familiar with the work and previous books by Aimee Ray: Doodle Stitching and Doodle Stitching - the Motif Collection.

Aimee's new book continues in the same style as the previous books, but with a bit of a difference. Instead of 'simply' being a collection of embroidery motifs (and projects), in Doodle Stitching - Embroidery & Beyond Aimee takes on several different types of embroidery.

Crewel, Shisha, stumpwork and redwork, among others, are covered in the book. The book has a general 'basics' section at the back, but introductions and stitch instructions for the 'special' stitches are described in separate chapters. Each chapter also has several projects to make, featuring that particular technique.

As Aimee says in the introduction "This book isn't designed to bury you in technical details, rather to introduce you to several fun embroidery techniques.." - and that is exactly what it does. The book is a nice taster of these techniques, giving you fun ideas for using them - it's always nice to be able to add something new to our embroidery work, right? And if you find that one of the techniques speak to you in particular, you can always go looking for more information.

The other Doodle Stitching books have quite a lot of motifs, this one doesn't have quite as many, although it does also have a section with alternative motifs for some of the projects. But since the focus in this book is sligthly different than just pretty motifs - I think there's still quite a lot to dig into. And obviously you can always use the techniques in this book with motifs from the other books or other patterns you like.

To sum up: this book is a nice introduction to some new stitchy techniques - and if you like Aimee's other books, I'm pretty sure you will like this one as well!

  1. My copy just arrived in the post today, so glad to see your review! Like her other books, this one makes stitching seem somehow less intimidating - great for a newbie like me who has lots of enthusiasm but little experience. Fun projects, easy explanations, inspiring! Christine
