Stitched Words, a gallery on Flickr.

I love seeing ongoing creative projects, especially ones involving embroidery (of course!) and here's a pretty cool one: Emma is stitching a word every day for a whole year! That's a pretty big commitment. The really fun thing is seeing how she interprets the (usually) random word. There's a lot of different textures and styles, some are just the words, some have illustrations and so on.

I wanted to know a bit more about the project, so I asked Emma a few questions about it. I also asked her to pick two of the words she has stitched and tell us a bit more about them. You can see all the words in this set over on Flickr.

Thank you, Emma!

Find Emma on Flickr and Tumblr. She also has a website and a shop.

Tell us a little about yourself and the project
I'm Emma, an illustrator and designer based in the South Coast of England. I live in a Barn in the Woods with my husband and spend my time sewing, drawing and doing the washing up. The project is basically me embroidering a random word every day - simple as that!

What inspired you to start this project?
I wanted to do something that would force me to be creative every day. I've always wanted to do a daily project and have started many but they've never been very interesting so I've always given up. The idea for this one popped into my head one morning and I was excited about starting it, which I thought was a good sign!

Why words?
Firstly because I wanted it to be a typography project and secondly, I needed something I could generate randomly everyday and which had endless possibilities; words seemed the obvious choice.

What inspires the way you stitch each word?
I tend to generate the word first thing in the morning and then decide pretty quickly how I will do it. Sometimes it's obvious and I know exactly what to do, sometimes it's not! I try to use the meaning of the word to influence the stitching but sometimes it's just the shape of the letters that decides how it will go. It also depends on how much time I have. Some days I only have 10 minutes, so no time for anything fancy, other days I could have a whole afternoon so these tend to be more elaborate.

Do the words mean something more to you once you've stitched them?
Well, I've learned some new words which has been interesting and it's certainly made me think about words and meanings more than I ever had before.

How do you keep going? A word a day is a pretty big commitment!
I've tried to keep it interesting by opening it up to other people to suggest words via twitter. I had a 'font week' where I asked followers to suggest a font for me to stitch and then when my random word generator died I asked people for suggestions again. It's nice to make it interactive as knowing other people are out there and enjoying what I do definitely helps with my motivation! Mostly though, I have fun doing it and that's the most important thing.

Any advice for anyone wanting to take on a long running project like this?
Pick something you actually enjoy doing! Stitching is something I can get on with whilst doing other things like watching films or sitting in the pub drinking gin, so that helps. Also, don't put too much pressure on yourself, if you miss a day, the world won't end and you can always catch up when you have more time. Most important is to have fun doing it.

Wild
Wild
I stitched this one very recently. It wasn't randomly generated, as I decided to sew it as a small tribute to Maurice Sendak, the author and illustrator who recently passed away. I have always loved his books since being a little girl (In the Night Kitchen is my favourite) and I wanted to do something to express my thanks. I didn't really plan what I was going to do, just sewed the word and then added little elements from Where The Wild Things Are, his most famous book. I think it turned out ok and I hope he might have liked it.

Like, whatever.

Whatever
This is another of my favourites. I stitched it in Edwardian Script onto floral fabric. I was trying to do something that was a juxtaposition between a modern day vernacular and traditional techniques and patterns. Teenagers on tumblr seem to like it!

Inspiration: Pin Pals

&Stitches Inspiration
We're starting a new series of sorts: Inspiration. We ask someone what inspired a stitched piece, and they tell us what their inspiration was. Simple as that. Because we love hearing what inspires people. We hope you do too!

We start the series of with this great piece from Pin Pals (great name, too, right?!)

Janitors
My inspiration for this piece came from necessity of sorts. The studio space I work in is having a group show in a couple of weeks based on the letter J. I went through a lot of J words and none of them really grabbed me, so I decided to look at the dictionary, and one of the first words was "Janitors" ...that one stuck. The image of janitors working together in a house came to mind, the rest I sorted out on graph paper. I see them as cleaning house, literally and metaphorically. They are spring cleaning janitors here to help us out.

Alice in Red

Found on Flickr

What is not to love about these perfectly executed Alice in Wonderland embroideries? Martha from Q is for Quilter used old illustrations to make redwork quilt blocks. She used only one strand of floss to stitch the beautiful crisp lines and many small details.

On Martha's blog you will find images of all the six quilt blocks she embroidered thus far, and a link to the cleaned up illustrations as well so you can stitch your own. I know I can't wait to wait to try my hand at one! I also had a look around Martha's shop and she makes the most beautiful aprons from vintage fabrics and some with hand embroidered details too. Well worth a visit!

Cate Anevski - Issue 2 featured designer

Cate Anevski
1 :: 2 :: 3 :: 4

As you know, Cate Anevski is our featured stitchy designer in Issue 2 and we wanted to show you just a little bit of the fun stuff Cate gets up to. We absolutely love the design she made for Issue 2 - here's a little peak at it, it's actually a set of two!

Her style is so fun and quirky, really special we think! Although Cate mostly does embroidery patterns, she also designs sew-your-own custom-printed dresses for Blythe dolls and softies from time to time.

Check out Cate's blog and shop.

Thank you, Cate!

Hunt for the Red Dot

Found on Flickr

I love this fun piece called Three cats and a laser by Alexis Helmrath! I think most (if not all) cats have the same reaction to laser pointers! I know my cat Tijger loves to hunt after the little red dot.  Read more about this embroidery on Alexis's blog.

Owl be the winner

A bit later than planned but we finally got around to picking a winner for our 'Stitch & Win' contest! The idea was that you would make something from or something inspired by our first Issue.  The (randomly) chosen winner is Jenelle!

One of the articles in Issue 1 was about finding colour inspiration in your home and Jenelle stitched this adorable little fellow inspired by colours from a vintage travel poster. A little birdie (owlet?) told me that this pattern (pillow + embroidery) will be available for purchase soon. :)

Laughing gnome by Mimilove

Found on Flickr

I am absolutely smitten with the work of Mimilove. The quirky combination of stitching and painted imagery not to mention her frequent use of song lyrics etc. make for some really unique pieces. And they're colourful too and in my book that's always a good thing!

What I especially love about this piece, though, is the smiley faces, how cute are they?! :-)

Check out more of Mimilove's work in her Flickr stream.

Stitch-a-header update!

Fab letter 'C' submitted by Jasmine
You may remember that we asked you, our beloved stitchy friends, for some help with putting together a stitched blog header for our blog 'ransom letter style'. The idea was that we at least would try and put together the words &Stitches from your efforts, the word Blog was optional.

The good news is that we have most of the lettering for the &Stitches ready. Thank you for all the beautifully stitched letters you have submitted so far! The only missing letter is the letter S (twice). For the word Blog we only have a G (but we do  have three of those!) Unless I haven't been paying attention and missing letters *are* posted somewhere in our Flickr group and I just didn't notice it. In that case let me know... Or if you have a letter in the works but haven't got around to posting it or aren't quite ready yet, let us know too!  Lettering from previous stitched letters (in a sampler for example) are also very welcome  :)  Looking forward to see some of the missing letters appear in the &Stitches Flickr group!
